Frozen and Winter

This week we have been finding out all about how things change when they get cold. We started the week by making some jelly watching how the jelly changed when it got hot and then cold! The children made some very good observations of what had happened. On Tuesday we looked at the water we had put in the freezer the day before. Some children made ice decorations and some had a go at painting with frozen paint. Rather like painting with an ice lolly.

We have also done some activities related to the film Frozen. The children have made cards and books, collage snowmen and an Olaf. One child even recreated Olaf out of bricks.

In PE we started our music and movement story of Goldilocks . All the children joined in really well acting out the story to the music. We will finish the story next week.
Next week we start a new RE topic on Gathering and we will be talking about the things we like to do with our friends at nursery. Our theme is Chinese New Year. In literacy we will be looking at information in books and our sounds of the week are t and m. In maths we will be separating a group of objects in different ways and looking at how the total remains the same. In PSE we will be talking about not giving up if we find something tricky.
Here are a few of the other things we have done this week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Rhyming Books

This week we have been thinking all about words that rhyme. We have listened to rhyming stories, sung nursery rhymes and played some rhyming games. The children have been really good at thinking of rhyming pairs. We have played lots of games in small groups: for example put your hands on  your head if your name sounds like  pill. bill till. Answer Jill!
In RE we  thought about things that are the same and things that are different, between a celebration in church and at home. Some of the children sorted pictures into two groups.

In small group time we explored how the sounds of instruments can be changed by playing them in different ways.

We also had our first PSE lesson. We thought about things that we find hard to do. Answers included climbing trees, riding my sister's bike and eating rice! The children who started in September also looked at their "next steps" in learning for this term. We were impressed by how many of them remembered what they were.
Next week we will be talking in key worker time about how we can get better at things we find tricky. The new children will also be sharing their favourite book with the group and we will be having some of these stories for our end of morning story.
Next week our theme is the Frozen film and Winter. We had a little taste of winter this week and the children enjoyed exploring the ice in the outdoor area.

Please do name all hats, gloves, scarves and coats. We already have quite a collection of unnamed clothing in our lost property basket.
In our small group times next week we will be thinking about changes we can see over a period of time as a result of a cold
temperature. We will be making jelly, and exploring ice. We will be looking at what happens when we mix colours and how the texture of paint changes if you add for example salt or sand.
Here are a few of the other things we have enjoyed doing this week.

Have a lovely weekend
