Diwali and the Fire Engine Visit

During this week we have been finding out lots of things about Diwali and how it is celebrated. We started the week by hearing the story of Ramu and Sita and watching a clip on the whiteboard about how a little girl celebrates Diwali with her family. We all enjoyed a snack of Naan bread and also made some lovely firework pictures using glitter, sand , chalk  and a lot of glue!We  made little Diva pots from play dough and decorated some Diwali cards.

On Tuesday we had a visit from Green Watch at St Albans Fire Station. They gave a little talk about what a fireman does before dressing me up as a firefighter.  The children listened really carefully and enjoyed contributing to the talk Then we went out in small groups to see the engine and all the children were able to sit in the cab.

After half term we start a new topic finding out about different celebrations and festivals. In maths we will be looking at shapes that are all around us and in phonics we will be continuing our activities on listening to the initial sound in a word and starting to blend 3 sounds in a word eg c-a-t gives the word cat.

I hope you all have a lovely half term and that the sunny weather we have today continues.

My Favourite Food

This week we have enjoyed hearing about the children's favourite foods. Sweeties, noodles, chocolate buttons and peanut butter and jelly were just some of the suggestions.

On Tuesday a group of children made some orange and yellow jelly. In mini maths later in the day all the children had a taste of each flavour and then voted for which was their favourite flavour. We then compared the number of votes each flavour received.

In Literacy we listened to the story "Oliver's Vegetables " and talked about foods we don't like. We remembered who was in the story and talked about what happened at the beginning and end of the book.

In RE we looked at some more of the children's Baptism photographs and then acted out a Baptism.

Next week we are looking forward to our visit from a fire engine on Tuesday.  On Tuesday there is also a talk on maths in nursery and reception from Mrs Gritz starting at 9.05am in the  hall. In maths we will be talking about where we can see numbers . Don't forget to bring in an object with a number on or a photograph of a number in the environment.

Enjoy the weekend

My Favourite toys

This week we have enjoyed hearing all about the children's favourite toys. On Thursday we had many extra visitors to nursery as the children brought a favourite soft toy to our nursery teddy bear's picnic. We listened to the story "Scruffy Bear bakes a cake" and then we made some little cakes. Once they had cooked we all sat down with our toys to enjoy a picnic. Earlier in the week the children made a book about their favourite toys.

In maths we have been exploring shape and talking about how we can describe shapes. We also had a shape hunt outside. Next week we will be comparing two amounts and talking about who has more and who has less. In phonics we will be finding out about words that rhyme.

Have a lovely weekend.

My feet

This week we started by talking about all the things we could  do with our feet. Jumping, hopping, scooting and walking were popular answers, but we also had painting, ballet, swimming and climbing up a wall.
In maths we practised counting steps and claps and in art we used wellington boots to make paint patterns on paper.
In RE we started our new topic on Welcome by making a welcome card for a friend in nursery. Next week we will be looking at
the children's baptism photographs. Thank you for all the ones I have received so far. RE will be on Tuesday and Friday next week so there is still time to send in your photograph.

Next week we will be talking about our favourite toys. If your child would like to bring in a favourite teddy or doll on Thursday we will be having a little teddy bears picnic.
Here we are using our feet to make our way around the trim trail.
Have a lovely weekend.
